We’ve all heard that drinking water is good for you, right? That has never been up for debate.
Knowing how much water to drink daily is another story. Many professional disagree on the amount of water an individual is supposed to consume in a day. We have heard 8 glasses of 8 ounces, which would be 64 ounces. Drinking a gallon of water is now a popular daily recommendation. I did some research and wrote a whole blog post on Daily Water Recommendations.
HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD I DRINK A DAY?
According to The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the amount of water you need daily is roughly:
- Men- 125 oz (3.7 liters)
- Women- 90 oz (2.7 liters)
This recommendation is not just drinking water though. It is a combination of drinking water, drinking other liquids, and eating foods that contain water. Research shows that we get about 20% of our daily water necessities from foods that we eat.
With doing a little math, we could assume that 80% of our daily water should come strictly from fluids. That is roughly 100 oz for MEN and 78 oz for WOMEN. Use this as a starting line and then listen to your body.

HOW DO I DRINK MORE WATER DAILY?
Here are my top 5 tips on how to drink more water and reach your hydration goals.
1. FIND THE BEST WAY TO TRACK IT.
There are many ways to track your water, from apps, spreadsheets, sticky notes, and water bottles.
You have to find the way that works best for you, otherwise you won’t stick to it.
Personally, I do not want to use my precious brain power to count or remember what number of water bottle I am currently drinking. So I use a gallon water bottle like this.
2. FIND A GOOD WATER BOTTLE OR BOTTLES.
I use the gallon water bottle to track the water I need to drink throughout the day, but transfer the water into a stainless steel tumbler throughout the day.
I seriously love it. The gallon water bottle shows how many ounces I should be at for specific times of the day. It literally takes all of the guesswork out. I have found this water bottle is a game changer for me.
If you don’t want to go out and buy one, you could use a water bottle you already have and some rubber bands or pony tail holders. Each rubber band represents the number of water bottle you are on for the day.
For example, if you are supposed to drink 100 oz, and you have a 25 oz water bottle, put 4 rubber bands on it. Each morning, start them at the top, when you finish a water bottle move one rubber band down to the bottom. You could also do this with a sticky note on the fridge or counter and put a tally when you empty a water bottle.
3. GO TO BED WITH YOUR WATER BOTTLES FILLED.
Since my water bottle is massive, I leave it on the kitchen counter throughout the day so it doesn’t take up fridge space. I just use the water that is already measured out to restock my tumbler throughout the day.
Having your water ready to go first thing in the morning is SO helpful and can help you get your metabolism going!
4. NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT YOUR WATER BOTTLE.
Always, always, always have a water bottle with you, even if you’re just going to be gone for 5 minutes.
I learned really quickly that carrying my gallon water bottle was not going to be fun, so I use a smaller stainless steel tumbler throughout the day. It is much easier to use throughout the day and it keeps it nice and cold!
5. SET CERTAIN GOALS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
Set certain times of the day to have a specific number of ounces done for the day. I like to work ahead and get more than half of my water gone in the morning. Take it from me, it is not fun chugging water at 9:00 when you are tired and ready for bed.
Maybe before you eat lunch, you need to have two water bottles gone. Or you can’t leave to go home from work until you have 60 ounces done for the day.
Things like this will become habits and then you won’t even have to think about them!
