I have heard people brag about the fish tacos and how absolutely wonderful they are for a long time. Honestly, I don’t love fish so I never gave them a try. One of my coworkers loved them so much that she said she makes them weekly. I was convinced to give them a shot.

After trying multiple recipes I found online, I was not impressed and nearly gave up. There are so many layers of flavor to the fish tacos but none were perfect. My husband and I would like the seasoning on one recipe, but did not care for the flavor of the coleslaw with the another recipe.

After tweaking a few recipes and combining our favorites from other recipes, we found a perfect recipe that we are excited to share with you. As always, my recipes at Living Practically are easy and made with ingredients you already have at home.

WHAT TO MAKE FOR SUPPER?

This fish tacos recipe is going to become a family favorite! Be sure to add it to your family’s master list so you don’t forget about it. If you spend time wondering “What should I make for supper?” you have got to set up systems for meal planning that will save you hours each week! I am pretty passionate about it and created a course teaching moms how to meal plan.

WHY I LOVE FISH TACOS

Fish tacos are delicious. I’m not a huge fish person but I like these tilapia fish tacos. There are enough other flavors going on that it masks the fish taste. Tilapia is a mild fish anyway and I recommend non-fish eaters starting there.

Fish is very good for you. It should be a regular part of your diet.

Tilapia is a very affordable fish and great to keep in your freezer! Unlike many other meats, it takes very little time to thaw and is perfect for those busy days where you forgot to meal plan. Grab some tilapia out of the freezer and in 30 minutes you can have supper on the table. This blackened tilapia recipe is another one of our favorites!

You can throw this meal together in under 30 minutes. Seriously, a healthy and amazing supper in under half hour. Sign me up!

INGREDIENTS IN FISH TACOS RECIPE

Most fish taco recipes consist of three components- fish, coleslaw, and sauce.

It can sound overwhelming and like a lot of work, but I can assure you, I have made it as simple as possible while still keeping the delicious flavor!

INGREDIENTS IN BLACKENED TILAPIA

  • paprika
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • salt
  • parsley
  • cayenne pepper
  • oregano
  • 2-3 tilapia fillets
  • brown sugar (If making plain blackened tilapia, I like to add 1 Tbsp of brown sugar to the seasoning, but for fish tacos I omit because the coleslaw and fish sauce have enough sweet and tangy flavors.)

You definitely don’t have to use a cast iron skillet, but I highly recommend it. I have recently been paying attention to toxins throughout our houses and nonstick skillets are filled with them!

INGREDIENTS IN COLESLAW

  • cabbage (purple, green, or a combination)
  • mayo
  • cilantro
  • garlic powder
  • salt
  • pepper
  • honey

INGREDIENTS IN FISH SAUCE

  • mayo
  • taco seasoning (try my homemade recipe that is healthier & cheaper)
  • juice of 1 lime

One of the things I recommend when making fish tacos is work ahead. If you know you’re going to be making fish tacos, mix together the blackening seasonings a few days before. Double or triple the batch and store in jars like these. Chop the cabbage in the morning or the night before, or buy it already shredded.

If you would like to use homemade taco seasoning, make sure you’ve got some in the pantry or freezer. Again, you can make this days in advance.

WHAT TO EAT WITH FISH TACOS

Both of the nutrition programs I follow, 2B mindset and Ultimate Portion Fix, focus on eating a significant amount of vegetables at lunch and supper. Vegetables are such good fuel for our bodies and we try to have two servings of them at every meal, well not breakfast.

I like to pair these tilapia fish tacos with a nice salad or a big portion of the coleslaw we use as a topping for the tacos.

If you don’t like corn tacos, you could always serve this over rice and make it into fish taco bowl.
