Unless you are overly cautious and a little neurotic, you probably have smudges, fingerprints, and dust that have accumulated on your MacBook screen over the last few months. With two little toddlers running around and constantly touching everything, I know I sure do!

You can ignore a dirty screen for a while, but at some point it starts to really get on your nerves. Maybe it has actually gotten bad enough and it is preventing you from being able to see your screen. I used to be intimidated by cleaning my screen because I didn’t know how and I didn’t want to do it wrong.

You can use what you already have at home to clean your MacBook screen in under 2 minutes!

Why do I need to clean my MacBook screen?

Unless you are incredibly careful and never touch the laptop screen, you will have a few smudges and fingerprints that build up on your screen. Humans have oil on their fingers and when we touch screens, that oil is deposited there. Unless we do anything to remove it, that smudge is going to stay there.

Another reason to clean your MacBook screen is to get rid of the dust. Your MacBook screen, like any other surface, collects dust particles that float through the air. Take a few minutes to wipe away anything that has made its way to your screen.

How often do I need to clean the screen?

Honestly, just clean it when it bothers you and you find an extra minute or two. For some people, it might be a weekly chore to quickly wipe down the screen and maybe even keyboard too. Personally, as a busy mom, I will probably not prioritize this task weekly, but probably monthly, or when I notice it needs some TLC.

A clean screen does not directly affect the ability for the laptop to work. Many items that require cleaning are essential for it to properly function. Cleaning your MacBook screen is more because of aesthetics than functionality.

What do I need?

When you first got your MacBook, it probably came with a tiny little cloth. Not sure where ours ended up, but if I was a betting woman, I would guess the trash.

If you still have yours, you can use that! Otherwise, just grab a lint-free microfiber towel.

Depending on how much gunk has accumulated on your screen, you might need just a tiny bit of water to dampen a corner of the towel.

How to clean MacBook screen

Grab a microfiber, lint-free towel and a little water and let’s get started!

  1. Power off your computer and make sure nothing is plugged in.
  2. Open laptop and use the microfiber towel to wipe screen. Apply gentle pressure, but not too much as to damage the screen.
  3. If needed, dampen a corner of the towel with a little bit of water and gently wipe at the more stubborn spots.
  4. Let it air dry for a couple of minutes and then power on and use like normal!

It is not necessary, but if you happen to have an electronic screen spray, you can use that. Personally, I do not think it is worth going and buying when water and a towel work just as well!

A few words of caution

You now know how to clean MacBook screens, but there are a few things that you could do incorrectly and damage your screen or whole computer. Read carefully, but remember, cleaning your MacBook screen is a simple job.

  • Do not use paper towels or abrasive towels on the screen.
  • Avoid too much pressure and excessive wiping on the screen.
  • Make sure everything is UNPLUGGED and powered OFF.
  • Keep water and other liquids away from the product. Spilling water on the laptop can cause serious damage.
  • Never spray anything directly onto the MacBook screen.
  • Don’t get moisture into any of the openings on the keyboard or screen.

What you need to know…

  • When your MacBook is looking smudgy, don’t worry, cleaning your MacBook screen is easy!
  • Use a microfiber towel and a little water.
  • Don’t use any chemicals on the screen.
  • Never spray anything directly on screen.
