I absolutely love cooking and baking, but in this season of life with little kids, it seems to be much easier to stick with simple recipes.

That’s where crisps and cobblers are some of my favorite desserts. They are easy desserts to throw together and there are only a few dishes to wash, which is a MAJOR plus! You can easily have all of the dishes done before you even get your apple crisp out of the oven.

In our hometown with around 900 people, we get to know everybody really well. Every fall, a local man pulls up his van and sets up shop alongside our main road. Most of us refer to him as “The Apple man.” He sells very cheap apples, fresh from an orchard in Michigan. You know me, I’m always trying to save money, so I buy a couple of bags throughout the fall season. We like to eat them fresh, dehydrate some, and of course make some wonderful fall desserts.

This homemade caramel sauce recipe is simple and we love to have it in the fridge during the fall season. It is wonderful with our fresh apples, drizzled on fall desserts, coffee, or ice cream.

Why I love Apple Crisp

Crisps are a very simple dessert to make without needing a lot of fancy equipment. Just grab two bowls, some measuring cups and spoons, and a fork and you are good to go!

They pair wonderfully with a scoop of ice cream and elevate the simple dessert to absolutely decadent!

It is nostalgic for my husband and I. Apple crisp is a fall dessert that I make multiple times each harvest season.

Ingredients in Apple Crisp

Simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand!

  • apples– Any kind will do!
  • brown sugar– Make sure it is packed tightly in the measuring cup.
  • milk– Any kind is fine.
  • flour– Use a gluten free flour mix if needed.
  • water
  • quick oats– You could substitute old fashioned oats if that is all that you have on hand.
  • sugar– You can substitute with other sugar alternatives.
  • vanilla pudding mix– One time I made this recipe without the pudding mix because I did not have any on hand. I don’t recommend it as it will not set up the same. Obviously there is enough sugar that it was still delicious and full of flavor, but the liquid ratio was off.
  • cinnamon– You can’t have a fall dessert without cinnamon.
  • butter– Salted or unsalted is fine.
  • salt– Just a pinch to bring out the flavor!

What type of apples should I use?

Technically any apple will work when making apple crisp or any other apple dessert. Some apples are known for being better for baking, such as Granny Smith, Cortland, Honey Crisp etc. If you would like some more information, here is an article that explains the five best cooking apples and why.

Should I peel the apples?

My husband and I disagree when it comes to making apple desserts. Growing up, my mom always peeled the apples, so I prefer them peeled. However, it’s a lot of work, and a whole extra step now that I am the one doing the peeling. My husband has taught me to skip unnecessary steps and minimize work wherever possible ☺️

When I make apple recipes, I like to do about half peeled and half unpeeled. I don’t think you can tell too much in the flavor or texture. Actually, I am a texture person and I kinda like the texture that the skins bring. So, long story short, it is totally up to you! If you and your family are picky, I recommend peeling them. If you are not and you want to save 5 minutes, don’t peel them.

The best way to enjoy apple crisp

The absolute best way to enjoy apple crisp is warm (fresh out of the oven is best of course), with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and homemade caramel sauce drizzled on top. You can thank me later.

Can I make this recipe gluten free?

Absolutely! As a gluten free newbie, I have been doing a lot of experimenting to find recipes and flour mixes I actually enjoy. To make this apple crisp gluten free, simply use your favorite gluten free all purpose flour mix and make sure your oats are certified gluten free!

Can I use a different kind of oats?

There are three main types of oats, quick oats, old fashioned oats, and steel cut oats. This recipe calls for quick oats, the old fashioned would work also, it will just change the texture of your crumb topping. I would not recommend using steel cut.
