EASY STROMBOLI RECIPE- 30 Minute Meal
This easy Stromboli recipe is not like the typical Italian sandwich you would find a at pizza shop. A Stromboli is normally made with Italian cheese meats like salami, and a thin layer of tomato sauce. Well, that is not how my momma used to make them.
Our Stromboli sandwich has sausage, pepperoni, veggies, pasta sauce, barbecue sauce and mozzarella cheese. I remember my mom making them frequently when I was growing up and each time they tasted a little differently.
That is the beauty of this basic Stromboli recipe, you can make it however you want, based on the ingredients you have on hand and what your family likes.
WHY I LOVE THIS STROMBOLI RECIPE
- Cheap. You really don’t put many ingredients into this sandwich and can use what you have on hand already.
- Easy & Quick. Within 10 minutes of prep time, you can have these sandwiches in the oven. They are such an easy weeknight meal with only one skillet to wash afterwards!
- Make ahead of time. If you are into meal prepping, this is a great option! Take less than 10 minutes to make the meat mixture and stick into the fridge until you are ready for it!. You could even double the batch of meat and stick it in the freezer.
- Adaptable. Similar to chili and tacos, everybody makes their own Stromboli a little differently. You could use other breads. We have used brioche, Hawaiian, ciabatta, and even pizza dough, but French is our favorite. Try some different cheeses, veggies, or even meat. No matter how you throw it together, you can’t go wrong!
INGREDIENTS IN STROMBOLI
Pick whichever bread you would like to use for your Stromboli sandwich. Here are a few of the ones we have used.
- French or Italian bread
- homemade pizza dough (turns into more of a calzone or a braid)
- hoagie rolls
- refrigerated pizza dough from a can
You can add as many fillings as you would like to your Stromboli sandwich. Here are just a few ideas, pretty much anything you put on a pizza you can fill in a Stromboli.
- sausage
- ham
- pepperoni
- salami
- tomato sauce
- BBQ sauce
- peppers
- onions
- mushrooms
- jalapeños
- black olives
- mozzarella cheese
CAN I FREEZE A STROMBOLI?
Yes, definitely! You can freeze the whole sandwich.
Some breads can get soggy with the meat mixture, so I recommend freezing the meat mixture separate from the bread. You could freeze it as a calzone or braid though and those should not get soggy.
Even though you can freeze the whole sandwich, I actually recommend freezing the meat mixture and bread separately. Pull it out and assemble it for a quick meal.
Just thaw the meat for a few hours, heat on the stove or in the microwave, give it a good stir, throw it in some bread, sprinkle with cheese, and toss it in the oven for about 30 minutes and bam! A quick and delicious supper ready in under an hour!
Down below I have the “recipe” I use to make Stromboli. This is a sketch of the basics, and you can definitely adjust it to fit your family’s taste!
Basic Stromboli
Ingredients
- 1 lb sausage
- vegetables of your choice onions, peppers, black olives
- meat sauce you can use any red sauce, tomato paste, pizza sauce, etc.
- Pepperoni
- BBQ sauce we like Sweet Baby Ray's
- Italian seasoning fennel, garlic salt
- Cheese we like mozzarella
- Something to serve it on bread, potato, dough to make a braid or calzone
- 1 package yeast
- 1 1/3 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 to 5 cups all purpose flour
Instructions
- Fry sausage and drain.
- Sauté onions and peppers in skillet. Add meat, meat sauce, BBQ, and spices. Let simmer 5-10 minutes on low.
- French loaf- Cut loaf in half lengthwise and scoop out some of the inside bread. Fill with meat mixture and sprinkle with cheese. Put the top back on and wrap with foil. Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes, until cheese is melted.
- Calzone- Follow directions below to make the dough. After the dough has risen, roll it out. (This will make plenty of dough. I only use half and freeze the rest.) Fill with meat sauce and top with cheese. Fold over and seal.
