If you are looking for bold flavors to spice up your tilapia, this homemade blackening seasoning mix is packed full of flavors and will not disappoint. Blackening seasonings can be used for different proteins, like shrimp, fish, chicken, and steak. Our favorite is blackened tilapia that we use to make fish tacos. YUM!
Add a little brown sugar to this basic recipe and completely change the traditional flavor and give it a sweet and spicy twist.
WHAT ACTUALLY IS BLACKENING?
Blackening is the term for a cooking process, not the seasonings themselves. When covered in seasoning and then seared in a hot skillet, the meat will get a dark brown (or black) crust. That is what “blackening” is, but there are some seasonings that are common when blackening meat.
INGREDIENTS IN BLACKENING SEASONING:
- paprika
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- salt
- parsley
- oregano
- brown sugar (optional)

HOW TO MAKE BLACKENED TILAPIA
- Pat the fish dry with a paper towel. This will remove extra moisture and have the seasonings stick better to the tilapia.
- Mix together the blackened seasoning mix. (Meal prep tip– Have the blackened seasoning mix already prepared. I like to triple the batch and store in a little mason jar. When I need some, I simply pull it out and sprinkle on my protein of choice.)
- Sprinkle mix heavily on both sides of the fish.
- Using your fingers, gently pat or rub the mix into the fish.
5. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add 2 Tbsp oil. I like using a cast iron skillet because it gives it such a nice coating.
6. Place the tilapia fillets in the hot skillet. TIP- You should hear a sizzle if your pan is hot enough. That is what you want! After a couple of minutes, flip to the other side.
7. Remove tilapia from the heat and enjoy!
