I wish that I could insert smells into my posts. The aroma of granola baking in the oven is seriously so AMAZING and will be etched into your memory forever!

As a young child, I remember coming home from school many times to the smell of homemade granola right out of the oven. It was one of my dad’s favorites and he would eat it by the handfuls. I always thought he was crazy. Now, I catch myself doing it too. I guess we do turn into our parents.

I ALWAYS have a container of homemade granola on hand at our house. It is perfect to eat by the handfuls, as cereal, or on top yogurt for a little homemade parfait.

A few other staples in our house are homemade granola bars, healthy cookie dough bites, and peanut butter & jelly bites.

IS HOMEMADE GRANOLA HEALTHY?

This homemade granola is delicious, but not exactly what you would call “healthy”. It is such a controversy on what is exactly “healthy.” There is brown sugar, honey, and granola is heavy in carbs, all reasons for some to say that it is not healthy.

In my humble opinion, I think it is a healthy option in moderation. It is homemade and prepared with ingredients that you already have in your kitchen.

Many granolas that you find at the store are filled with extra ingredients and preservatives. I love making homemade foods any chance we get because I know exactly what is going into it and can control how much goes in.

WHY WE LOVE HOMEMADE GRANOLA

  • Cheap. Buying these basic ingredients in bulk really cut down on the cost. You can make a batch of granola for only a couple of bucks.
  • Delicious. Once you taste this amazing flavor, you won’t ever go back to store bought granola!
  • Healthy. Many store boughten granolas have preservatives in them, not this recipe though. Also, you can control how much brown sugar goes into each batch, if any.
  • Adjustable. My husband is not a fan of the dried fruit in the granola so I normally leave it out. You can add in other ingredients that you and your family like, or stick to this recipe, the choice is yours!
  • Simple. This recipe really is SO simple to make! It only takes a couple of minutes to whip up a batch and only a couple of dishes afterwards.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE BEST HOMEMADE GRANOLA

  • honey
  • oats
  • cinnamon
  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • nuts (optional)
  • dried fruit (optional)

This recipe truly is SO simple. You just need to microwave a few ingredients (or melt on the stove). Then, mix everything together in a bowl & bake!

HOW TO MAKE GRANOLA

  1. Mix oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts (if using) together.
  2. Melt the butter and honey in a saucepan. (You could also use microwave).
  3. Pour honey mixture over the oat mixture and stir well.
  4. Spread onto a baking sheet that is covered with wax or parchment paper.
  5. Bake at 325 for 15-25 minutes. I normally stir after about 10 minutes.
  6. When it is done, pull out of the oven and let it cool. Break into tiny chunks and store in an airtight container.

STORING HOMEMADE GRANOLA

Our granola gets eaten up pretty quickly, before it has the chance to go bad. As long as you store it in an airtight container, it should last for a 2-3 weeks! Trust me, this granola will be eaten

We always have a container of fresh, homemade granola in our cabinet. It is really easy to make and lasts for a few weeks. But, you could easily make a batch and freeze some for later if you can’t eat it fast enough.

I hope you and your family enjoy this homemade granola as much as we do!
